Art Explora Festival: A Floating Museum Celebrating Mediterranean Culture in Piraeus

The Art Explora Festival, a unique cultural initiative based in the Mediterranean, is currently taking place at the port of Piraeus, Greece, from October 3rd to 12th, 2025. At the heart of the festival is a striking 47-meter-long catamaran that functions as the world’s first travelling floating museum. This impressive vessel offers free access to a series of exhibitions, concerts, performances, and immersive experiences both on board and at the quayside.

The festival is part of a voyage through 15 countries that began in March 2024 and will conclude in autumn 2027. It aims to foster new ways for the public to access, engage with, and participate in arts and culture by leveraging digital technology and mobile programs. Frédéric Jousset, founder and captain of Art Explora, explains that the museum-ship attracts visitors fascinated by large sailing vessels, creating an inclusive cultural experience for a broad audience who might otherwise view art as inaccessible or expensive.

Inside the ship, visitors embark on a virtual reality journey called “Mediterranean Wonders,” designed by Ubisoft, which showcases iconic cities such as Athens, Alexandria, and Venice in their historical prime. The upper deck features an immersive sound installation celebrating the richness and multiculturalism of the Mediterranean, created by IRCAM, the French Institute for Research in Acoustics and Music attached to the Centre Pompidou.

The main pavilion hosts the contemporary art exhibition “Under the Azure,” featuring works from around 20 artists inspired by the myths, creatures, and cultural visions of the Mediterranean. Renowned artists such as Joan Miró, Etel Adnan, and Andrian Villar Rojas have their works on display. The festival also includes a diverse live program curated by Katerina Tselou, comprising performances, films, concerts, dance, installations, discussions, and workshops that explore ecology, sustainability, migration, and local issues related to Mediterranean ports and islands.

Art Explora at the E8 gate of Piraeus port remains open until October 12th. While entry to all events is free, some activities such as visits to the floating museum and workshops require prior free online booking. This festival beautifully connects Mediterranean cultures through innovative art and offers a vibrant celebration accessible to all visitors.
